Retirement planning FAQs
How much super do I need to retire in Australia?
ASFA estimates a comfortable retirement for a single person requires approximately $595,000 in super (assuming you own your home and receive some age pension). A modest retirement requires around $100,000. Use our Retirement Gap Calculator to see if you're on track for your specific income goals.
What is the FIRE movement?
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. The core principle is accumulating a portfolio 25x your annual expenses (based on a 4% safe withdrawal rate). At that point your investment returns theoretically cover your living costs indefinitely. Use our FIRE Number Calculator to find your target.
When can I access my superannuation?
You can generally access your super when you reach your preservation age (60 for most people born after 1 July 1964) and retire, or turn 65 regardless of employment status. Some limited early access conditions apply for severe financial hardship or terminal illness.
How does the age pension work in Australia?
The age pension is available from age 67 for Australians who meet residence and income/assets tests. The maximum single rate is approximately $1,144 per fortnight. Many retirees receive a partial pension even with significant super — use our Age Pension Estimator to check your likely entitlement.
What is a reverse mortgage and is it right for me?
A reverse mortgage allows Australian homeowners aged 60+ to borrow against their home's equity without making repayments. The loan is repaid when you sell, move into care, or pass away. It can supplement retirement income but reduces your estate value. Use our Reverse Mortgage Calculator for an initial estimate and always seek independent financial advice.
